Today Matters by John Maxwell 2
Part one was a mini introduction to the book: Today Matters by John C. Maxwell.
In this post, we will be looking at one of the things we need to be disciplined at: Having the Right Attitude.
Success without a good attitude is possible but your attitude will determine how well you enjoy the success. Most people with very bad attitudes do not get very far in life. The winner’s edge is not in a gifted birth, high IQ or in talent. The talent’s edge is all in the attitude, not aptitude.
Aptitude can be bought but not attitude even with a million dollars.
The confident person increases his chances for success while the pessimist invites the negative outcome he expects.
The confident person increases his chances for success while the pessimist invites the negative outcome he expects. What is your attitude at the beginning of a new experience? Excitement? Anxiety? Cautious? Fear? What your response is, determines what you derive from that experience. When you approach a task, fix your mind on the facts and not on your feelings. Focus on possibilities, not problems.
When we interact with others, our attitudes often set the tone for how we treat one another. Give a smile and you get smiles in return. Act combative and many are likely to snap back at you.
All things equal, attitude wins. All things being unequal, attitude still wins.
Your attitude, not your achievements determine your happiness. It is not the events that make us happy or sad, it our choice of response to the events that determine whether we are happy or sad. “He who seeks happiness by changing anything but his own disposition will waste his life in fruitless efforts and multiply the grief which he purposes to remove”.
“The thoughts in your life will always be more important than the things in your life. “ What thoughts do you constantly entertain? You cannot buy or win happiness. You choose it!
Attitude is contagious! When you spend time with others, do they feel better or worse? Do you clear the air, give them fresh positive perspective or encouragement? Watch how people respond to you and you will know which kind of person you are.
The bottom line on attitude is that a good one helps to increase your possibilities or chances. Believing yourself, in spite of your areas of development, increase your chances of success. Looking for the positive in every situation helps you see opportunities that you would otherwise miss.
Being positive others prompts them to be positive with you and individuals who interact well with others stand a better chance.
Today, decide to keep a positive attitude and use it to influence others. If you desire to make your day a masterpiece, then you must decide to have a great attitude!
Take responsibility for your attitude. No one can make you happy, that is your job and it should not be delegated. If you want today to be a good day, you need to take charge of the way you look at it. You could not choose your race, parents, nationality and you cannot change them but your attitude can be changed!
Think, Act, Talk and Conduct yourself like the person you really want to become for you are it already. It may be in the seed form, the more you give expression to it, the more it shows to others that you are it. “What lies before us and behind us are tiny matters to what lies within us” – Walt Emerson
Place a high value on people. You cannot dislike people and have a good attitude at the same time, neither can you have a bad attitude and encourage others at the same time. Develop a high appreciation of life. “Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out” – John Wooden
Decide today to manage the decisions of your attitude. Beyond making a decision to have the right attitude, ensure you manage that decision to implement it. Make the necessary adjustments to make your attitude right. Like any discipline, your attitude will not take care of itself that is why you need to attend to it daily.
