Peace and blessings in Jesus name! Last time I looked at the purpose of courtship and some factors that will enhance the quality of your courtship. Today, I shall go further by looking at the next important step towards marriage which is, “Formal Engagement and A Public Christian Wedding”.
This is a good process to follow. This is a time to formally and publicly introduce yourselves to parents, relations and friends. In some cultures, it is also a time for the payment of dowry.
Don’t just grab a woman and start living together as man and wife. That is very wrong especially for a Christian. Wisdom demands that you give Honour to the family of your wife/husband to be by participating in a formal engagement. Pay the dowry but ensure it does not violate your Christian principles. Whatever you give must be things that will give glory to God.
We can learn a few lessons from the story of Isaac and Rebekah, we see that Rebekah’s people were only given precious and honourable things, not things for ritual. And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things (Genesis 24:53). Let me state clearly here that it is very scriptural to pay dowry!
It is important to know that during courtship period, nothing should be taken for granted. It is true you have decided to spend the rest of your lives together, if you discover both of you are not compatible and therefore cannot make it together, a U-turn is permitted. If you feel you made a wrong choice, call the relationship off! A broken courtship is permitted, if necessary. After all a broken courtship is not the same as divorce!
A Public Christian Wedding
Every successful courtship should culminate into marriage. Marriage is the union between a man and a woman with a view of building a God centered home. It is a covenant relationship between two people. Therefore, it is important to have a public Christian wedding ceremony in a Bible-believing Church; this is formally inviting God to be the third party in your union. The Bible says And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12) You are inviting Him to provide guidance in your married life. One of the reasons many marriages break up after a few years is because a proper Christian wedding is lacking.
Moreover, a public wedding affords members of your family, friends and well-wishers the opportunity to share the day of joy with you.
A public Christian wedding also makes it impossible for people to claim not to know that you are married. I have also discovered that marriages conducted in Church stand a greater chance of being successful than those that are not. My prayer is that you will enjoy a most fulfilling marriage in Jesus name
